Some typical consumption levels for computer equipment are:
* desktop computer: 60w (watts)
* CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor: 75w
* flat screen monitor: 25w
* laserjet printer: 7.2w
Using a 120-volt wattmeter borrowed from the public library, I made a quick check of some high-profile energy-consuming items at home, revealing the following:
* 32” television set: 90w
* coffeemaker: 980w brewing, 2w warming
* microwave: 1950w
* fan: 95w on low, 125w on medium, 180w in high
* 100w-equiv. compact fluorescent light bulb: 22w
* 17” Dell monitor: 84w active, 74w blank blue, 67w blank black, 69w screen-save, <0.1w active-off (standby)
* Laptop computer: 60w active, 25w idle, 1.6w standby mode.
* Dot-matrix printer: 3w idle; 13w max

Tips to reduce electricity Consumption
1 UNIT = 1000 Watts hour = 1 Kwh- LCD monitor saves 50 % more electricity than a CRT monitor so use LCD monitor in office and in home
- If you switch off fridge for 2 hrs (6.30 pm to 8.30 pm ) you can save electricity used for defrost
- Use electronic chock instead of common chocks
- Don’t use zero watt bulb it actually consumes 10 watts
- when you switch off TV , VCR or DVD player using the remote then also there is power loses so unplug this equipment when not in use
- Don’t keep on your computer and other PC equipments on while there are not in use
- Walls in your house which get considerable natural light should be painted in lighter/pastel shades to reflect light. This way, artificial lighting won’t be needed during the day.
- Check the working condition of your equipments (mostly A/C and Water Heater) once in year
- Don’t try to use complained equipments
- Buy efficient electric appliances. Before buying an equipment check that it is 5* product a symbol of energy saver
- Set the monitor to automatically shut off or switch to standby mode when idle
- Turn off the monitor when your computer is unattended, for instance when downloading files overnight
- Do not charge the phone overnight. Besides wasting power, it will damage the phone, too
Bridle Your Electricity Bills
Electricity bills have literally left you shocked? Want to tether your high flying electricity bill? Here we go with some tips to strive towards a shock-free current bill:
- There is no need to use warm water to wash clothes. It’s the soap that sterilizes the clothes and not the warm water. The hot water option in washing machine consumes more electricity.
- Put clothes only according to the capacity of the washing machine.
- Switch off computer and television when not in use; detach the connection from the current line.
- Minimize resorting to air conditioner to resist the climatic changes. Instead change your clothing style. Go for cotton clothing in summer.
- Use bulbs and other electric apparatus that consume comparably less electricity.
- Iron the clothes once in a week.
- If you prefer warm water to bathe in, heat the water using solar panel or some other alternatives. Avoid using electronic methods as far as possible.
- Avoid light embellishments. Switch off lights and fans when not in use.
When the Voltage varies..
Electric mishaps are on a ride during rainy season. A li’l caution can prevent both the disaster and the current consumption.At times, we can see lights glowing with unprecedented radiance. Excess voltage accounts for this. This may cause electronic devices to burst and may even cause an outbreak of fire.
Excess voltage occurs due to umpteen reasons. If the link in the three face meter breaks…or if a supply is being taken to the vicinity…or if the cable lines oscillate…or if the fuse connection in transformer neutral accumulates verdigris… all these results in a rise in voltage. If you feel like something is wrong, switch off the main switch. Inform the same at the electricity office.
- Don’t insert or pull out a plug if your hands are damp. Make sure that the switch is in off mode; wear rubber slippers before inserting or pulling out a plug.
- Switch off the fridge first and then only clean up. Don’t use metal apparatus to remove ice during defreezing.
- Before changing a bulb, switch off the connection. Avoid being near the bulb while switching it on because bulb is prone to explode in humid atmosphere.
Simple Tip:Does it make sense to turn off your computer monitor to save energy? The simple answer is "yes."Save Electricity
